Kick Start Your Career image

The TAFE in Schools Program involves senior secondary school students undertaking a vocational subject as part of their Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) program. This program contributes towards their secondary school completion certificates, whilst undertaking a nationally recognised qualification in a program of choice.

Offering a kick start to a career whilst completing their senior years of schooling, the TAFE in Schools program offers VET in Schools (VETiS) and School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) as two options for achieving this.

School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBAT)

South West TAFE are the biggest provider of delivery for school based apprenticeships and traineeships in this region.
School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are open to students 15 years of age or over.

School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships involve the student undertaking the VCE or VCAL as well as being employed part-time with a signed training contract.

Training options are tailored around the employer, apprentice and school requirements.

These options include:

TAFE a day / Work a day
Students will attend a day of training and a day on the job with an employer.  They will attend their secondary school the other 3 days.

Block Training
Students will attend a one week block of training at TAFE a number of times throughout the year.

On-the-job
This is where all the training takes place in the workplace.

SBAT training can occur at Certificate II or Certificate III level training, and are usually done over a two year period.  The student needs to allow for an average of 13 hours per week for employment and training, and spend at least one timetabled day during the normal school week on the job or in training.
All SBAT contribute the students VCE or VCAL studies.

Students need to register their interest with the schools careers teacher and engage a New Apprenticeship Centre (NAC) for sign-up.
