South West Institute of TAFE's engineering training includes short courses, apprenticeships, traineeships and post-trade qualifications in mechanical and fabrication engineering. These courses are offered in three locations at Warrnambool, Hamilton and Portland.

The Portland Campus boasts an industry specific Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) Engineering Centre at the Portland Campus, combining the latest technology and training in CNC machining. We are continually upgrading and improving our facilities to keep abreast of business and industry developments.

    Course DescriptionCurrently, there is a national shortage of engineers. This course aims to create graduates who can address this shortage, and to enhance the abilities of those already in the field. It has been carefully structured to link ‘on-the-job training’ with training provided off-the-job, thereby ensuring all skills acquired are practical and relevant to industry.
    Broad based modules are offered, providing students with a well-rounded appreciation of all aspects of the industry. The course features an introduction to computer use in relation to engineering work. It also addresses machining, the use of hand and power tools, and the fundamentals of electrical concepts and principles. You may choose subjects that complement your existing knowledge and experience. It is designed for engineering apprentices to study at a higher level whilst completing their apprenticeship.

    Course DescriptionComputers have revolutionalised many aspects of the workplace, and this is as true for design work as any other application. Computer Aided Design (CAD) provides the means to design and develop new designs and products more rapidly than by traditional methods. CAD enables the user to lay out and develop their work on screen, print it out and save it for future editing. This course will provide participants in the engineering trade with postapprenticeship skills in design drafting using AutoCAD 2011.
  • Welding (Level 1) (Short Course)

    Course DescriptionThis introductory course is ideal for anyone with an interest in welding who would like to learn the basics of several welding processes. It is designed to provide a fun, practical insight for the novice welder or anyone with limited experience. Participants will be shown oxy-acetylene, MIG, TIG and ARC welding methods together with appropriate safety procedures. Following completion of Welding Level 1 units, participants will be eligible to enrol for the next level of training.
