Working closely with the fishing industry for the past twenty years, South West TAFE has shaped the delivery of maritime training in tune with industry needs.

The industry, incorporating sea vessels, ports and a huge network of shore-based activity, makes a substantial contribution to our local and national economy. And to uphold the standards of excellence required the demand for new, trained staff will continue to increase.

South West TAFE’‘s Maritime Training is provided in purpose-built, state-of-the-art classrooms. Programs include pre-sea, coxswains, marine engine driving and master class certificates.

    Course DescriptionThis course is more commonly known as a ‘Pre-Sea Course’. It is recognised by the maritime industry as providing the skills and knowledge required of people to work as deckhands aboard commercial vessels in Australian waters. This course would suit any person wishing to enter the Australian Maritime industry as a commercial fisher, or in another capacity. Graduates may pursue careers as deckhands aboard commercial vessels within Australian waters.

    Course DescriptionThis program prepares you to work as an engineer on board commercial vessels with propulsion power less than 750KW. Subject to other requirements being met, you may be eligible for a Certificate of Competency as a Marine Engine Driver 2 issued by Maritime Safety Victoria (MSV). Upon meeting the MSV requirements, you will be able to take charge of machinery aboard a seagoing vessel where the output of the main propulsion machinery does not exceed 750KW.

    Course DescriptionThis course is more commonly known as Coxswain. This course provides training to equip participants with sufficient skills and knowledge to take charge of a commercial vessel of less than 12 meters in length, operating within the limits of sheltered and inshore waters within 15 nautical miles of the coast and up to 250KW propulsion power.

This is the qualification needed to gain a Master Class 5 / Skipper 3 Certificate of Competency from Marine Safety Victoria.
