Study during COVID-19

South West TAFE would like to reassure students and the wider community that we will still be offering the best possible training and education to our future workforce during these uncertain times.

It just won’t be in the usual way.

Our doors will still be open, along with all TAFE’s in Victoria as we are considered an essential service by the Victorian Government.

However, we will now be adjusting our operations to continue to provide training to all of our students during the COVID-19 restrictions.

Whilst we pride ourselves on our hands-on training, most of our courses will shift to study from home and remote learning during the period of restrictions.

In keeping with recent advice from the Department of Education and Training, those courses that require on-campus training or learning will proceed under stringent social distancing and hygiene protocols that will be implemented at each campus where training may occur. This will be limited to those courses where hands-on training or assessment is necessary and where remote study is not viable.

Our campuses remain open

Our campuses remain operational at this time, with limited staff on-site. So you can still call in during business hours 8.30am – 5pm Monday to Friday, phone us on 1300 648 911, email us at or chat with us via our webchat.

We remind those who need to come on-site to strictly adhere to the Victorian Government’s social distancing and hygiene guidelines that we have in place at SWTAFE.

Changes we’ve made

Our teaching staff have been working hard to adapt our courses for students to study from home via digital or remote methods. Some students will speak daily with their teacher, others may log in and share a class online. Some students will be working on paper-based learning materials with calls daily from the teacher.

We are also organising access to equipment and facilities for those students who may have some challenges with being able to study from home.

You may have already heard from your teacher in regard to these plans and how your course will be adjusted to ensure your studies can continue. Don’t worry if you haven’t as yet – this is all being organised and they’ll get in touch with you shortly.

Given the government restrictions that are now in place to reduce the spread of coronavirus in Australia, we expect this new model of study will continue for some time. It’s hard to put a time limit on this at present, but be assured that we aim to make the best use of this time with our students and provide continuity of study.
