Maya Netherway grew up around Landcare groups so a career in the conservation and land management field was always on the cards.

“Mum had studied natural resourses so I was always out with her planting trees which I loved,” she said.

After completing secondary school Maya worked in a few different jobs before successfully gaining a traineeship at Warrnambool City Council in the Parks and Gardens team.

“I was then really lucky that I was able to gain a full-time role in the same team and that was when I started my Diploma of Conservation and Land Management at South West TAFE,” she said.

Maya said the training she received had really helped her during her work.

“I had already completed the Certificate III in Conservation and Land Management and that really helped me with my diploma. We had done a lot of plant identification which was great for both work and my diploma,” she said.

Maya said she loved that every day was different and getting outdoors and giving back to the community was what she loved most about her job.

She said there was also a lot of opportunity for career progression and a qualification in Conservation and Land Management could lead to so many different roles.
