Matt is working as a trainee at Warrnambool City Council in the Parks and Gardens team and has almost completed his Diploma of Conservation and Land Management at South West TAFE.

“I had always wanted a job that was outdoors and in nature and something that was hands-on so this is perfect for me,” he said.

Matt first became interested in the conservation field after studying a Certificate II in Conservation and Land Management at South West TAFE while he was in year 11 at Emmanuel College.

“It was great to give me a taste for working in the field. I learnt a broad range of skills and it opened my mind to further possibilities of work in this area,” he said.

After completing year 12, Matt completed a Sport and Recreation traineeship at Emmanuel College before successfully gaining the position at Warrnambool City Council.

He also completed a Certificate III in Horticulture at South West TAFE which he said complemented the Diploma of Conservation and Land Management course perfectly.

“The courses worked so well together, I was able to learn gardening skills along with project management skills and so much more,” he said.

Matt said he was now aiming to gain a full-time role with Warrnambool City Council and wanted to give back to nature and improve the region’s natural resources.

“I have such a passion for the outdoors and surfing and I just want to give back and protect the environment around us,” he said.

He said the skills he had learnt during his studies and at work had opened up so many opportunities.
