How to become an apprentice or trainee

1. Decide on your preferred industry or trade

The first step is to research and find out more about the different careers and pathways available at SWTAFE.
You can register to attend one of our upcoming info sessions to chat with our teachers about our pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships and traineeships we have on offer. You can also ask a question and a member of our team will be in touch.

2. Polish your resume and cover letter

Our Skills and Jobs Centre can help you prepare your resume and cover letter to apply for apprenticeships and traineeships. They can also assist with job application and interview skills.

3. Find an employer

There are many ways to find apprenticeship opportunities including:

• Search the Apprenticeship Employment Network and the Australian Apprenticeship Network provider
• Try searching online at Job Search, Australian Government website, Facebook, LinkedIn and other job sites
• Check your local newspaper as they generally advertise apprenticeships weekly
• Tell everyone that you’re looking for an apprenticeship
• Keep an ear out as most apprenticeships are gained through word of mouth
• Ask trade outlets such as plumbing and hardware suppliers if you can post a notice at their business
• Phone or send your resume to companies you’d like to work for
• Drop into their business or work sites with a ‘calling card’ or resume
• Register with the Skills and Jobs Centre

4. Sign your apprenticeship/traineeship training agreement

Once you’ve found an employer, they must register you with an Australian Apprenticeship Network provider within three months of starting work and arrange for you and your employer to sign a training agreement. Make sure you list SWTAFE as your training provider.

5. Enrol at SWTAFE

Once your training agreement details are received by us (this can take a few weeks) we will be in touch via phone or email with the next steps for enrolment. Contact us if you have any questions you may have in the meantime.
