This course provides you with the advanced practical skills and technical knowledge required to work in marine engineering roles within the maritime industry. This qualification prepares you to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot marine engines and vessel systems on commercial vessels operating in near coastal waters.
You will gain hands-on experience through a combination of classroom learning, practical training, and industry-aligned assessment activities. The course focuses on marine engineering operations, safety procedures, engine maintenance, fault diagnosis, and emergency response, preparing you for a range of engineering roles onboard commercial vessels.
Successful completion of this qualification contributes towards eligibility for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency, subject to AMSA requirements, including sea service.
During this course, you will learn how to:
Training combines theory and practical learning to build the confidence and technical skills required in real maritime environments.
This course is delivered over six weeks through a combination of classroom theory, practical skills training, and support for completing assessments. Students participate in teacher-led theory classes, supervised practical activities, and supported learning sessions designed to develop industry-ready maritime engineering skills.
The course also includes Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Mandated Practical Assessments (AMPAs), which are integrated into the practical assessment requirements. AMPAs are conducted in small groups of no more than five students, in line with AMSA requirements. Students may complete vessel-based assessments with an AMSA-approved assessor or participate in teacher-managed practical assessments and supported completion activities.
Note: Elements of this course may be delivered from another SWTAFE campus or location, including but not limited to Warrnambool, Port Fairy, and Portland. Students may be required to make their own way to these locations, depending on the availability of suitable transport and staffing.
This qualification can lead to employment as:
You may find employment across industries, including commercial fishing, marine tourism, offshore operations, aquaculture, charter services, transport, and emergency response.
You may also continue their studies through pathways into the Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 Near Coastal).
