VET DSS course paved the way to Melanie’s automotive career

/ Success Story
I never imagined myself working on cars, I’d always planned to be a police officer. In year 10 I was required to complete a VET DSS course and decided I’d give automotive a try as the other options didn’t really interest me. So, I gave it a go and ended up really surprised myself how much I enjoyed it.

I never imagined myself working on cars, I’d always planned to be a police officer. In year 10 I was required to complete a VET DSS course and decided I’d give automotive a try as the other options didn’t really interest me. So, I gave it a go and ended up really surprised myself how much I enjoyed it.

I also opted to complete my year 10 work experience in automotive and did a week at D.I.M.M.S. in Hamilton. I found myself genuinely loving the environment and the hands-on work. By the end of the week the owner Doug offered me an apprenticeship on the condition that I complete year 11 first.

Whilst completing year 11 I did one day a week work placement at D.I.M.M.S through the Vet DSS program and at the end of the year Doug offered me the apprenticeship in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology.

I’ve really enjoyed the practical, hands on nature of learning in the workshop and at South West TAFE. It has been rewarding to see how what I learn in class directly relates to the work I do on the job. There is something incredibly satisfying about diagnosing an issue, working through it and seeing a vehicle running properly again because of my effort and knowledge.

Starting a career in the automotive industry has been the best decision I’ve made. Getting the insight into the industry through SWTAFE was the key to finding a career that I’m passionate and excited about and I love learning more about the industry every day.

I’ve received so much encouragement, support and positive feedback from my workplace, family and wider community. If working in a trade is something you’re passionate about, step outside your comfort zone and give it a go.
