Short Range Operator Certificate of Competency

The Short Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency (SROCP) provides the knowledge and practical skills required to operate a VHF marine radio safely and effectively.

This course is suitable for recreational and commercial vessel operators and meets the marine radio requirements for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Coxswain Grade 1 and Grade 2 Near Coastal Certificates of Competency. 

On successful completion of the training, you will undertake the external SROCP examination. If successful, you can apply for your certificate through the Australian Maritime College on behalf of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

You will learn how to:

• Operate a VHF marine radio safely and correctly.
• Make routine, safety, urgency, and distress calls.
• Use Digital Selective Calling (DSC).
• Access marine search and rescue services.
• Understand marine radio regulations and operating procedures.
• Maintain marine radio communication equipment.

This course is suitable for commercial and recreational vessel operators who are required to hold a marine radio operator certificate. It also supports those working towards an AMSA Certificate of Competency that requires an SROCP.

This short course does not include accredited units and training.

This course involves accredited units.  You will be required to complete assessment tasks to demonstrate your underpinning knowledge, skills and attributes to meet the course outcomes.  A combination of written, oral and practical assessment strategies will be used in either a classroom, online or workplace environment. 

Where units require demonstration of skills in a workplace environment, you will have the opportunity to do this either in your own workplace (where appropriate), through a practical placement, or by using one of the Institute's simulated workshops/classrooms.  Detailed information about the types, conduct and dates of assessments will be provided in advance.  You will also be provided with information about the opportunity for reassessment and appeal.

Some courses require specific resources or materials necessary for your study eg: tools of the trade, excursions, etc. Final costs will be determined upon enrolment.

• Over the phone: we will call you to take EFTPOS payment over the phone using your credit or debit card.
• In person: visit your nearest campus to pay by card.
• Authority to Invoice: if you nominate a third party (such as your employer) to cover your course cost, we will email you an Authority to Invoice form.
