Skills recognition

If you have previous skills or qualifications relevant to the course you are wishing to enrol into, you may be eligible for skills recognition or exemptions.

Recognition of prior skills

If you have skills and experience that relate to the course you are wanting to enrol in to, you may be able to get those skills recognised.

We will assess your current skills and knowledge against nationally-recognised qualifications. It will also identify any skill gaps you may have, meaning you will only have to do training in the areas you need to – it’s a fast way to achieve your goals and gain a qualification!

Recognition of prior skills can:

  • Count your existing skills and knowledge towards a qualification
  • Enhance your career options
  • Help you complete a qualification sooner
  • Reduce the duplicating of learning in areas you already have skills
  • Reduce study costs
  • Lighten your study load

What can be recognised?

  • Years of industry or business experience but no qualifications
  • Trade skills
  • Paid or unpaid work experience (e.g. voluntary or community work)
  • Life experience (e.g. travel, sport, hobbies, family)
  • Completed short course studies
  • Completed previous study

How can I apply?

Once you have applied for your chosen course and complete a pre-training review, you will meet with a course specialist. They will discuss your skills and experience and the relevancy to the course. If you have relevant skills, they will help you through the process of submitting an application to match and document your skills and knowledge against a qualification.

You may need to supply:

  • references
  • certified copies of certificates of completed courses and qualifications
  • awards
  • letters from clients
  • job descriptions

If you would like to chat with a course specialist about skills recognition prior to applying, contact our Customer Service Team.

Exemptions

If you can produce evidence of previously completed units that are equivalent to a unit/s in your course you may apply for an exemption from that subject.

For an exemption to be granted, the unit must be completed through a Registered Training Organisation or other educational institution.

Exemption options will be discussed with you as part of your pre-training review process. If this has not occurred prior to enrolment, please speak with your course coordinator.
