Free TAFE Courses

Free TAFE for Priority Courses will reduce the financial barrier for students wanting to train in courses that lead to priority occupations – those in demand from employers in the Victorian economy.

Free TAFE for Priority Courses is a Victorian Government program that will pay a student’s tuition fees, if eligible, to study one of 50 priority courses at TAFE.

Free TAFE covers tuition fees for priority courses for students who are eligible for government-subsidised training.

There may still be some costs like course materials, uniform or excursions applicable to the course you select.

South West TAFE is offering over 30 Free TAFE for Priority courses that are open to apply for 2020.

Students who are eligible for Victorian Government-subsidised training can access the Free TAFE for Priority Courses initiative to study tuition fee-free in one of the following courses at South West TAFE:

Agriculture, Conservation & Horticulture

Building & Construction

Business & Finance

Children's Services

Food & Hospitality

Nursing, Health & Community Services

Trades & Maritime

* Please note that places for these FREE TAFE courses are now capped and a selection process will apply for all places in 2020.

If you’re eligible, the Free TAFE for Priority Courses initiative will cover the tuition fees for the duration of your course. You’ll still need to pay for other fees, such as student services fees or materials fees.

Any Australian citizen or permanent resident or a New Zealand citizen is eligible to do Free TAFE for Priority Courses in Victoria if they meet the following criteria:

Under 20 or upskilling
• are under 20 (regardless of any other qualifications), or
• are 20 or older and enrolling in a course that is a higher qualification than you’ve previously attained.

Victorians who need additional support
Victorians who are:
• unemployed and clients of the Jobs Victoria Employment Network
• retrenched workers, or
• automotive supply chain workers.

Looking to change careers
Victorians who want to reskill, change careers, improve their employment prospects and/or meet the needs of local industries, subject to availability of TAFE places, and prioritised based on need.

If you don’t meet these criteria you may qualify for an eligibility exemption. An exemption will enable you to receive a Free TAFE place. Enquire now to find out if you qualify.

Please note: The Free TAFE for Priority Courses initiative will pay your tuition fees for only one course. Once you have enrolled in a tuition-free priority course, you cannot get a tuition-free place again, even if you do not finish your first tuition-free priority course.
