Course Overview
Introduction

This course will provide you with an overview of safety hazards and appropriate safety measures relevant to solar installations.

The course is designed for electricians, plumbers, apprentices and trade assistants who want to increase their safety awareness on solar installations.

It will also be a mandatory requirement for installers, apprentices and trade assistants working in the Victorian Government’s Solar Homes program through Solar Victoria as of 1 January 2021.

Solar Homes workers - mandatory requirements

The Work safely in the solar industry (VU22744) unit will be a mandatory requirement for all solar installation workers (e.g. PV installers, plumbers, apprentices and trade assistants) working in the Victorian Government’s Solar Homes program as of 1 January 2021.

All workers who are involved in the installation of solar PV or solar hot water systems in the Solar Homes program (typically electricians, plumbers, apprentices and trade assistants) will need to complete this unit in the Course in Working Safely in the Solar Industry (22515VIC) by 31 December 2020 to continue participating in the program.

Holding a valid White Card is already a mandatory requirement for working on any solar installation, however as of 1 July 2020, it will also be a mandatory requirement for Solar Homes installation workers.

Experienced workers who wish to update their qualifications can undertake Work safely in the solar industry (VU22744), and apply for credit transfers/RPL on remaining subjects, where appropriate, to gain the full course certification.

For example, an electrician who already has a White Card and Working at Heights could undertake the Work safely in the solar industry (VU22744) unit and Provide first aid (HLTAID003), then apply for a combination of RPL and Credit Transfer for the balance of the units to get the full course certification.

What will I Learn?
